The Fitness After Birth (FAB) Survey

What can physical activity and exercise do to enhance your experience of motherhood? Take our survey to find out.

Before you got pregnant your perfect Saturday afternoon was:
a. Running in the park or around a sports pitch
b. Shopping for shoes and handbags
c. Picnicking in the sunshine
d. A cup of tea, the weekend papers and a good gossip

The best thing about pregnancy was:
a. Planning which sport your baby would be world-class in
b. Simply having to buy a whole new wardrobe
c. Lovely pre-natal massages
d. Getting a seat on the bus

Your favourite exercise is:
a. Running or competitive sport
b. A sweaty workout in the gym
c. Yoga, pilates or tai chi
d. Swimming or walking

To really complement you someone should say:
a. What a great 5km time!
b. Your new playsuit looks amazing on you!
c. How on earth do you stay so calm and take everything in your stride?
d. You make the most delicious chocolate cake I've ever eaten!

So what do you answers say about you and FAB?

Mostly 'a's: Sporty Speedy Mum
You love being active and feeling strong and fit. You may be tempted to dust off the trainers and sprint round the park straight away but you'll benefit hugely from taking the time to reconstruct your core strength and waiting until your ligaments are less lax before pushing your body. Your self-motivation will get you back in shape, just remember to re-build your foundations first.

Mostly 'b's: Gorgeous Glam Mum
You’ve missed a whole season of non-maternity fashion and you're keen to get back into those skinny tapered jeans. You need to make sure you build up strength and stability carefully while you shed the extra baby-weight so you can be a toned yummy mummy with a flat tummy.

Mostly 'c's: Balanced Beautiful Mum
You enjoy the feel-good side of exercise and the balance it brings to your life. You want to know that the activity you do is safe and perfect for you and your body. You may want to get back into your old yoga or pilates class but before you do, it’s best to re-build the precise parts of your post-natal body that have been challenged by childbirth.

Mostly 'd's: Feisty Fun Mum.
Exercise is for fun and so you can eat your favourite foods. An Olympic Athlete's body might be nice, but feeling healthy and fit enough to keep up with baby and slide back into your favourite jeans is what will make you happy. Try exercising with fellow mums - more of a social than a hardcore training routine - and make sure you do the right exercises.
